One common reply to the question, “What’s wrong with politics today?” might be “Where do I start?” On April 2, three provocative Portlanders will share their starting point at City Club’s fourth Rant. The speakers will let loose on national and local politics, scandals, irrationalities and general annoyances.

Ranter John Schrag knows something about scandal. Before joining the Forest Grove-based News-Times in 2005, Schrag capped his 14-year tenure as news editor at the Willamette Week during the reporting and publishing of a series of articles about the sexual misconduct of former Gov. Neil Goldschmidt. Portland Mercury news editor — and ranter — Matt Davis is an expert at the sarcastic, irreverent and sometimes absurd, as demonstrated by his articles titled “Read the Goddamn News” and “Not County-ing Their Chickens” (illustrated with the heads of Multnomah county commissioner candidates photoshopped onto the bodies of chickens). Final ranter Roey Thorpe is no stranger to contentious issues, including same-sex marriage and women’s reproductive rights. As former director of Basic Rights Oregon and current head of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon, Thorpe is well equipped to rant. Get these three together and who knows what they’ll come up with.
