Portland's Gateway to the World
The Port of Portland’s marine and aviation facilities play an integral role in the region’s economy and quality of life by providing cargo and air passenger access to national and global markets. According to a 2007 study, Port activities indirectly support over 80,000 jobs and produce more that $1.75 billion in total income for the region.
In the coming years the region’s status within the international trade arena is destined to grow, as airline passenger growth at PDX continues its upward climb and projections call for freight volumes in Oregon to double in the next two decades. But as a public entity with fixed assets operating in an increasingly competitive and fluid marketplace, the Port also faces considerable challenges.
What, precisely, is the economic impact of the Port of Portland on the region? Is the Port ready to deal with new international trade, travel industry and regional transportation developments? What public investments in the Port are required to maximize the region’s competitiveness in the global economy?
Join us on Friday, October 26, when Bill Wyatt, executive director of the Port of Portland, will address these questions and discuss strategies for sustaining and expanding Portland’s gateway to the world.
