Oregon's Death Penalty - Time for a Change?

Oregon voters reinstated the death penalty in 1978. Critics point to the enormous litigation and custody costs, and the possible lack of deterrence in light of the decades of delay engendered by the appeals and post-conviction litigation process. Proponents argue that justice for victims and potential deterrence justify retention. Many question why the process is necessary. The issue is likely to come before voters again in the near future.
City Club welcomes two knowledgeable and articulate provocateurs to discuss the complexities of Oregon's death penalty. Josh Marquis, the District Attorney in Clatsop County, has defended and prosecuted capital cases. He is a co-author of Debating the Death Penalty and author of the journal article The Myth of Innocence. William Long is the author of A Tortured story: The Story of Capital Punishment in Oregon.
