NLC Power Trip

Bonneville Dam

State of WA Dept of Ecology

Date:
August 15, 2009 - 8:45am - 3:00pm
Location:
The Bonneville Dam and Klondike Wind Farm. Participants will meet at the Gateway Transit Center at 8:45 AM and carpool to the Klondike site, near the Biggs Junction.

The Pacific Northwest is a hub of energy. From New Deal-era dams to “green economy” wind farms, energy is big business in our region. Join the New Leaders for a tour of one of the oldest and one of the newest forms of energy production in the Columbia Gorge - the Bonneville Dam and Klondike Wind Project.

On this tour, participants will hear from Iberdrola Renewable’s Klondike Plant Manager, stand amidst approximately 400 megawatts (MW) of wind energy capacity, and get a peek inside a modern wind turbine. After the wind site visit, the group will head to the Washington side of the Bonneville Dam at Cascade Locks and check out the over 1,000 MW powerhouse dam (enough power for the city of Seattle!) and state-of-the-art fish facilities, led by a Park Ranger from the US Army Corps of Engineers. While heading back into Portland, participants can re-charge their own energy supply with a local brew at McMenamins’ Edgefield.

Please plan to bring a sack lunch.  The tour at the dam is expected to end around 3pm and the Edgefield portion of the day is optional.

This event is now full. If you would like to put your name on the waiting list, please email Amy to RSVP. Thanks!
