On June 17, 2011, at City Club's annual meeting, we honored a number of individuals who have contributed to the vital and sustainable Club that we all enjoy.
City Club Award - Susan Hammer
The City Club Award is the highest honor awarded by the Club. It is determined by the Board of Governors and not awarded every year – only in cases where outstanding service to the Club and the community merit it.
In determining the award recipients, the Club’s ideals of dedication to community service, civic engagement and leadership development are considered. Recipients not only ignite a vision of civic engagement through their participation in City Club activities, but contribute to the community and state through their leadership in many other organizations. Research Award - Roger Eiss
The 2011 research award was given to Roger Eiss for his outstanding service to the research board and his embodiment of the values and aspirations we have for the research program and the club as a whole.
Members of the Year - Caroline Harris Crowne and Gwen Millius
As co-chairs of the Agora steering committee, Gwen and Caroline successfully oversaw programs on topics ranging from Oregon’s fiscal health to Portland’s public education system. Through their hard work, dedication and partnership they demonstrated their active commitment to civic engagement and community involvement.
President's Award - Sue Thomas
Sue is completing her final term on the board as immediate past president. She has also been a research board member and chair, a research advisor to the Partisanship Study Committee, the chair of the Club’s excellent study committee on the Portland Development Commission, and a member of the Sustainability Study Committee.
President's Award - Marge Kafoury
In addition to serving twice on the Club’s board of governors, Marge has been hugely instrumental in the quality of Friday Forums that we enjoy. As a long-time Friday Forum committee member and current chair, Marge has personally curated over a year’s worth of Friday Forums herself.
President's Award - Don Williams
Don has been a City Club member for over 30 years. He has served two terms on the Research Board, served on the Board of Governors, served as the Club’s president in 2007-08, and has continued to serve the Club in any capacity requested since leaving the board in 2009. He retired this year from a distinguished career at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, but not from his commitment to City Club. All of us who have served with Don could not have been successful without his support and counsel.
