Explore "Wildwood" in Forest Park with Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis

Date:
July 27, 2012 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location:
Forest Park
Sold out. Please email amy@pdxcityclub.org to be put on the waiting list.

City Club members (and their kids!) are invited to join Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis, author and illustrator of Wildwood, on a hike through Forest Park. Learn how Forest Park inspired the Impassable Wilderness, Avian Principality, and The Long Road. Is the ivy in Forest Park as bloodthirsty as the ivy in the book?  Hikers may also hear clues about Under Wildwood, the second book in the series due out in September.

Wildwood is a fantasy-adventure story with intricate illustrations, written for middle grades. Colin Meloy is the singer and songwriter for the Decemberists. Carson Ellis is an accomplished illustrator of children’s books, including some in the Lemony Snicket series. Learn more about them, and about the Wildwood Chronicles, at wildwoodchronicles.com.

A naturalist from Forest Park Conservancy will join the group to answer questions about plants and animals in the park, and to explain how the Conservancy and Portland Parks and Rec work together to remove invasive ivy.

The hike will last about 2 hours, and will include some uphill and downhill sections. Participants need to bring water and snacks, and wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe footwear with good traction.

This event is free and open to only to City Club members, who may each bring one non-member guest (adult or child). Space is limited to a total of 16, so register today. To sign up, email Amy or call 503-228-7231 x110. The meeting location and other details will be emailed to registered hikers the day before the event.

This event is sponsored by NLC and Agora.
