The Hearts of Horses, by Molly Gloss, tells the story of female horse gentler Martha Lessen and her life among the isolated people of northeastern Oregon in 1917, after the young men of the region had largely gone off to World War I. This austere but lovely novel shares the life of a woman with an unusual profession surviving - and ultimately finding her place - in a lonely and sometimes inhospitable land.

The book touches on themes of war, loneliness, abuse of people and animals, friendship and commitment to the land and a way of life that was even then dying out. This intensely well-researched novel was named one of the "150 Oregon Books for the Oregon Sesquicentennial" by the Oregon State Library.
