Theme: Creative Economies
Portland has become known as a center for the new "creative
economy," a place known for the production and exchange
of cultural goods of all kinds. According to theorists such
as Richard Florida, the raw materials of creative economies
include talent, ideas and innovation. It's claimed that creative
economies confer new economic and cultural benefits on their
host communities. As more people move to Portland to pursue
creative careers, and as government officials and policy makers
try to develop incentives to recruit and sustain creative
individuals and entrepreneurs, we think it would be useful
to learn more about the present state and the future of Portland's
own creative sector. What are some of the different forms
the creative economy takes in our community? What are the
advantages and disadvantages that creative workers encounter
in Portland? What role should government policy play in fostering
the business of creativity?
In order to look into these questions, we will to hold monthly
meetings examining different aspects of the creative economy,
focusing each time on specific endeavors.
