Washington County’s foresighted economic development plan is laying a strong foundation for recovery from the nation’s current economic crisis. In addition to its long relationship with industry-defining businesses like Intel, the county has recently attracted next-generation companies such as SolarWorld. Businesses such as these enhance the region not only by generating new jobs and tax revenue, but also through donations to community organizations and educational programs.

Economic development organizations and programs play a key role in promoting the economic vitality of the Portland-Vancouver region. In 2007 a group of business leaders established Greenlight Greater Portland, the first business-led and business-funded regional economic development organization in the region. Greenlight’s activities include identifying and promoting the region’s competitive advantages, including high-tech manufacturing, outdoor apparel and sustainable business clusters, and defining strategies for retaining businesses and attracting companies to the area.

Sustainability. The word has become so commonplace that it’s in danger of being stripped of any precise meaning. Organizations and individuals throughout the state – from businesses to municipalities to nonprofits to homeowners – now tout their commitment to sustainability, but how, exactly, should we define sustainability? And what, specifically, does it mean to engage in sustainable business practices?

On Friday, March 21, fresh on the heels of a supplemental legislative session in February, Governor Ted Kulongoski will share his thoughts on the state of the state – and following his remarks, the governor will take questions from the floor.

Should Americans be worried about the safety of products imported from China? Are U.S. jobs at risk because of inexpensive imports from China? Is Oregon well positioned to take advantage of growing markets in China?

On Saturday, February 2, the population of Gresham – the fourth largest city in Oregon – is projected to reach 100,000. Yet most Portlanders residing “close-in” know little about Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village and the eastern edge of Portland, even though together they constitute the most culturally diverse area in the metro region, are experiencing rapid population growth and are home to a number of large businesses.
