The State of Affordable Housing in East Portland

What has happened to housing in Portland? Jessica Larson, director of the Welcome Home Coalition will share why housing is so tight. Betty Dominguez, the East County Program Director of Home Forward and Justin Buri, the Executive Director of the Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) will help us understand the impact on East Portland -- a part of town that is traditionally affordable.

Who is getting squeezed and why? How is this shaping our city and neighborhoods?

Jes Larson is the director of the Welcome Home Coalition which has conducted extensive research to understand how other local communities fund affordable housing and what solutions will work for the Portland Metro region. Working alongside dozens of local housing leaders, she is organizing this local campaign to secure new, dedicated and local revenue to adequately fund housing.

Betty Dominguez is the Director of Policy & Equity for Home Forward, the housing authority serving Multnomah County, and the largest owner/developer of affordable housing in the state.  She has been with Home Forward over 8 years having previously held positions in their Development & Community Revitalization department and managed the agency’s Moving to Work program.  Betty is a member of the Portland Housing Bureau’s Advisory Commission.  She is the past president of Habitat for Humanity Portland, and currently sits on the Board of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Portland.

Justin Buri is the Executive Director of the Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT), Oregon's only statewide, grassroots, tenant-led renters' rights organization. CAT's mission is to educate, organize and empower Oregon renters to demand and obtain safe, stable and affordable rental housing.  Justin leads CAT's Housing Justice Program, which builds the leadership of low-income renters to advocate for policies relating to affordable, stable and healthy rental housing laws and policies, at the local, state and national levels of government.
